Community groups throughout the Algester electorate are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to $20,000 as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s We Are Queensland action plan.
We Are Queensland is being rolled out over the next four years, and has been developed to ensure greater social cohesion across the state.
Member for Algester Leeanne Enoch said the We Are Queensland Small Grants Program was introduced to build stronger local ties by supporting social, inclusive initiatives that welcome and bring together all citizens.
“We have many cultures across our electorate, and this diversity brings richness and growth to our community,” Ms Enoch said.
“Events like Many Cultures, One Community in Algester, the Multicultural and Dragon Boat Festival Regatta in Forest Lake, or Forestdale’s Songkran Festival, are always great days.
“The Small Grants Program has been introduced to assist organisations who are putting on these sort of events, and to encourage more events like them,” Ms Enoch said.
Tapan Sarker from the Bangladesh Puja and Cultural Society, based in Forest Lake, said Queensland benefits greatly from multiculturalism, and it’s something we should be celebrating more.
“Queensland is a shining example of many different cultures coming together as one,” Mr Sarker said.
“It’s important we continue to champion multiculturalism in this state, while also promoting Queensland’s rich and diverse history.
“The We Are Queensland campaign is great way to show that Queensland is a place for many.”
The Small Grants Program is available for community endeavours, with the goal of connecting families and neighbours, and creating new friendships between strangers.
Eligible groups can receive funding between $5000 and $20,000 to deliver projects and events that help bring residents closer together – regardless of age, background or beliefs.
“I encourage all not-for-profits, parents and friends associations, and other eligible organisations in the Algester electorate to apply for this grant,” Ms Enoch said.
“The amazing work conducted by the many organisations in our local area helps to create positive change within our community.”
The We Are Queensland Small Grants Program is open until 9pm, Friday 11 August, 2017. Successful applicants will be announced Monday 9 October.
